Since our charter in 1982, our American Legion Post 94 has welcomed veterans from all branches of our Armed Forces. Today, we continue to welcome all military personnel serving our country. Joining our Post enables you to continue serving your God, Country, and Community. Our mission is to implement the goals, aspirations, dreams, peace, and blessings for our country, friends, and families embodied in our preamble below.
On January 22nd, 1982, a group of 15 veterans met and applied for and were granted a charter for a Post in the American Legion. The decision to organize an American Legion Post resulted from the conclusion of these Veterans that the American Legion was the representative Veterans' organization in this country. That conclusion has been proven true as today the American Legion is the largest wartime Veterans' organization with nearly 15,000 local Posts throughout America and over 3 million members who care about America, Veterans, their families, and our nation's youth.
In spite of Sun City West's population, there was no veterans' organization in the community. Past Department Commander Jim Murphy, Jr. arranged a luncheon meeting for veterans on January 22, 1982, and a temporary charter was signed. An election of temporary officers was held, and Jim Lawless was chosen Commander. Andy Van Boeyer served as temporary Adjutant, and it was agreed that the next meeting would be on February 4, 1982.
A committee was formed to name the Post and named it "American Legion Sun City West Post 94". Twenty candidates were taken into the Post. They were presented with official blue and gold lapel pins. Officiating at the initiation were Robert Granger, Vice Commander, Department of Arizona; James Kirk, commander, District 11; and Charles Holtz, Post 29.
Permanent organization was affected on March 4, 1982. The first officers of the American Legion Post were Commander Mr. Henry Zedd; Senior Vice Commander Andrew Naymik; Junior Vice Commander Vivian Schoener; Adjutant Alvin T. Manion; and Finance Officer Cecil S. Lynn; Sergeant at Arms Leonard J. Gacioh; Chaplain Harold E. Day, Jr.
On September 2nd, 1982, the Post received its permanent charter from Julian Santos, American Legion Commander for Arizona.
In spite of the lack of a 'Post Home" and the need to hold meetings during morning hours at a commercial building, the year ended with 65 members, 53 of whom were charter members.
Affiliated Organizations
A Women's Auxiliary of American Legion Post 94 was formed in January 1986. The Legion has every reason to be proud of its Auxiliary. Auxiliary members are always anxious and willing to cooperate in every Legion activity. Sadly, the Unit closed; however, it can be re-instituted if interest exists.
Patriotic Days
MEMORIAL DAY has always been an outstanding occasion in this community. In addition to memorial events throughout our community, the goal of every Veteran to their last man is to keep MEMORIAL DAY sacred to the memory of our war dead from all of the country's wars; all graves are decorated on this National Holiday.
ARMISTICE DAY, now called VETERANS' DAY, originally marked the end of fighting in World War I. It is an important holiday on the calendar of Legionnaires everywhere and in the hearts of all Veterans.

The Veteran's Creed
1. I am an American Veteran 2. I proudly served my country 3. I live the values I learned in the military 4. I continue to serve my community, my country, and my fellow veterans 5. I maintain my physical and mental discipline 6. I continue to lead and improve 7. I make a difference 8. I honor and remember my fallen comrades
The Creed is the result of extensive discussions and consultations among the group that began last fall at Georgetown University. It is meant to inspire veterans to continue to serve and lead in their communities and our country and to continue to make a difference in our world.
"I believe the Veteran's Creed could remind veterans of what they miss about their service and encourage them to continue to make a difference in their communities and across our country," said retired Gen. George W. Casey, Jr., former Army Chief of Staff. "We need their talents."
Each element of the Creed is rooted in shared military tenets, the missions of participating veterans and military service organizations, and the altruistic ethos of veterans themselves. It is also meant to remind Americans that the principles and values veterans learned in the military—integrity, leadership, teamwork, and selfless service—can greatly benefit our country.
"The Creed will help prepare veterans for their productive civilian lives," said Dr. Joel Kupersmith, Director of Veterans' Initiatives at Georgetown University.
It is an expression of the values and traits each member of the military learns through their service and sacrifice for their country and which are carried forward in service to the communities in which they live and work after leaving the military.
The participating Veterans Service Organizations include AMVETS, DAV (Disabled American Veterans), HillVets, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, Military Order of the Purple Heart, Paralyzed Veterans of America, ROA (Reserve Officers Association), Student Veterans of America, Team Rubicon Global, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Wounded Warrior Project.
